چکیده

Population counts of aquatic insects are a valuable tool for monitoring the water quality of rivers and streams. However, the handling of samples in the lab for species identification is time consuming and requires specially trained experts. An aquatic insect imaging system was designed as part of a system to automate aquatic insect classification and was tested using several species and size classes of stonefly (Plecoptera). The system uses ethanol to transport specimens via a transparent rectangular tube to a digital camera. A small jet is used to position and reorient the specimens so that sufficient pictures can be taken to classify them with pattern recognition. A mirror system is used to provide a split set of images 90° apart. The system is evaluated with respect to engineering requirements developed during the research, including image quality, specimen handling, and system usability.

ERA: Suitable Method for Estimation of Ecological Effects of Pesticide Contamination on Aquatic Species

An ecological risk assessment (ERA) was conducted for Shadegan Wetland in Iran. The objective of this study was to assess the risk to phytoplankton, zooplankton, invertebrate, insect larvae, and fish affected by pesticide in Shadegan Wetland. Five pesticides (DDT, Aldrine, Dieldrin, Ametryn and Lindane) were assessed to evaluate the impact to aquatic community in the Shadegan Wetland. The risk ...

Dynamics of aquatic insect flux affects distribution of riparian web-building spiders

The flux of emerging aquatic insects from streams can provide a significant energy subsidy to riparian web-building spiders. However, despite the high temporality of aquatic insect emergence, the effects of such aquatic insect dynamics on spider distribution are poorly understood. To examine the relationship, the aquatic insect flux from a headwater stream in a northern Japanese deciduous fores...

How low can you go? Impacts of a low-flow disturbance on aquatic insect communities.

The natural hydrology of streams and rivers is being extensively modified by human activities. Water diversion, dam construction, and climate change have the potential to increase the frequency and intensity of low-flow events. Flow is a dominant force structuring stream aquatic insect communities, but the impacts of water diversion are poorly understood. Here we report results of an experiment...
